Last Wish: Introducing the Witcher Andrzej Sapkowski

Entitled 52 and a Half, this six minute long animated feature was created entirely in house by RED, with the aim of introducing Geralt of Rivia to audiences outside of Poland. After I finished the original Witcher on PC many years ago, I hunted down and bought The Last Wish, the only book translated into English at the time. Geralt de Rivia is a witcher; his sole purpose is to destroy the monsters that plague the world. I liked the short story nature of it, picking out different events and I'm also a fan of series like Dune that introduce you to lots of characters and even jump around in time, which would be awesome to do in a Witcher-based video game world, I think. €�The Last Wish” is basically a set of short fantasy stories featuring the antics of Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher who is paid to hunt down various monsters. In terms of atmosphere and narrative, it is very close to the short stories of Andrzej Sapkowski (collected in the Last Wish and Sword of Destiny anthologies). I am a big fan of The Witcher video game, so I will admit some bias in The Last Wish serves as an adequate introduction to Geralt's story, and is an excellent companion for The Witcher PC game. The Last Wish is in fact a prequel to the main Witcher novel – Blood of Elves. Not so surprisingly therefore, it branches off from the sequential job-after-job format of The Last Wish, and tries to bring us a broader perspective than the 'it's all in a day's work for a Witcher' feel of the predecessor. However With short stories, which was all in all quite an interesting way to introduce a character, there was little by the means of world building. Shortly after the release of well-received PC RPG The Witcher, The Last Wish is a fantasy short story collection by famous Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.
